The Gardens

The lovely gardens are set in the heart of the Pembrokeshire countryside overlooking the magnificent Preseli Hills. The 6.5 acres of grounds range from a wild dingle with natural springs to more formal gardens with herbaceous borders. A garden full of perfume and an incredible range of plants, it will not only appeal to gardeners but also to those who appreciate nature and wildlife.
Planting
The garden contains a fabulous range of plants from around the world that add perfume and interest whatever the season. We aim to develop the garden in a way that is sympathetic to the natural environment in which it sits. In addition to the many plants which attract bees, butterlies and insects, our hedgerows are selectively allowed to grow naturally with nettles and brambles and there is a wide variety of berry trees and shrubs.

Bird Watching
The location is a birdwatchers' paradise and the perfect place to watch and listen. Most of the birds to be found in Britain can be seen here including such rareties as the Water Rail, Peregrine and of course the Red Kite. Various bird boxes including a Barn Owl box have been erected. Swallows annually nest in our barns and Housemartins under the eaves of the house.

Wildlife
As well as specifically managing the plants and wilder areas with wildlife in mind, we encourage wildlife to visit by creating specific habitats for birds, butterflies, insects and small mammals. We also plan to create a large wildlife pond closer to the house (our ducks will also benefit by this!). Bat boxes will be put up in the barns when we get chance. There is much evidence in the garden of the presence of badgers, foxes, and moles(!) and occasional sitings of hedgehogs, grass snakes and slowworms.

Accessibility
This is a hilly area and the gardens have been created on a gradual natural slope. Generally this does not cause problems, but the gradient down through the wild dingle at the bottom of the garden is much steeper than the rest and is, therefore, less accessible for those with mobility problems, although a view over this area is afforded from the higher level. There are numerous seats throughout the grounds for people to rest a while and take in the views and walking sticks can be provided if required.
